Zero and Up

Why "Zero and Up"?
Zero and Up applies to many aspects of blogging: your visitors, subscribers, earnings, etc. No matter where you are with your blog, there's always room for improvement. Hopefully, Zero and Up will be a resource to help you take your websites upward, even if it's all the way from zero!

Tip For Bloggers: Use Title Case

This is a lesson that I recently learned, and I hope that some of you may learn this lesson through this post rather than through having someone deeming you “unprofessional” (that is, if you are trying to give your website a professional look and feel) It may not make sense to capitalize the first letter of every word in your post titles, but go ahead and do it anyway. Here are a few reasons:

Newbies Don’t Use Title Case
This isn’t always true - there are plenty of newbie bloggers that use title case, and there are plenty of non-newbie bloggers who don’t use title case. However, for many of the “experienced” or “big” bloggers, the lack of title case is an instant warning that alerts them of a blogger newbie who may not know what they are talking about. If you’d like to earn a reputable status in the blogosphere, using title case can help you avoid scaring away reputable bloggers.

It’s Tradition
Tradition isn’t a valid reason to have to do something, I know. And no, you don’t have to use title case. I’m sure that there are successful bloggers that don’t actually use title case. Nonetheless, there are some case where traditions are good to keep around just for traditions sake. Title case has been used in publishing for centuries now. By bringing title case over to internet media as well, blogs are even more closely linked to more traditional forms of publishing.

It Looks Nice
You may have to look at it for a while before it makes sense, but title case really does look a lot better than sentence case or less organized forms of capitalization. Mixed case is about the worst thing you can do, so don’t go titling any of your posts “this Is an easy Way to make Money Online.” It just looks uneven and uneducated. Title case is aesthetically pleasing,  and in that sense it can give your site an overall cleaner look.

If your site is more for personal reasons than professional, then you don’t really have to worry about remembering to use title case. I’d recommend, though, that if you are planning on giving any sort of professional status to your site, that you’d consider using title case on your blog. It won’t make a huge difference, but it could help in the long run.

Good call on the title case. I formed the habit back in the early days of blogging, and you’re right - it’s something that if you’re used to it, lack of it sticks out like a very sore thumb!

I don’t capitalize small words like “a” but, I do caps on significant title words.

Not John Chow -> I think technically small words such as “a”, “and”, “of”, etc don’t have to be capitalized, but they can be. As far as I know in that case it’s a matter of preference, but I could be mistaken.

Ryan -> It was about a year of blogging before I got into the title case habit, so be glad you learned it early :)
