Zero and Up

Why "Zero and Up"?
Zero and Up applies to many aspects of blogging: your visitors, subscribers, earnings, etc. No matter where you are with your blog, there's always room for improvement. Hopefully, Zero and Up will be a resource to help you take your websites upward, even if it's all the way from zero!

The “Why” Behind A Few Blogs

A few days ago, I asked readers to explain the story behind the name of their blog.
Today, I’d like to take a few minutes to look at some of the responses.

Kathy, from Is 8 Enough?
I’m embarrassed to say that I did not make up the name of my blog. A friend gave me my hosting package last year for my birthday and she thought up my domain name for me. I like it and it has stuck. Kinda pathetic, huh? -I think the name for your blog is great. Plenty of bloggers have names that others picked for them. What matters is that you’ve taken the name and run with it; it works great!

Jude, from Mature Not Senile
My blog is titled Mature Not Senile and for obvious reasons I didn’t use “Old” even if I feel like a 100 some days. Even though I accept the aging process I don’t like the words “old lady.” Mature lady sounds much better and regardless of the way young people view the older generation it doesn’t mean we are all senile. Okay so I forget things occasionally, but that’s so I can have space in my brain to add new information. -I like it, it’s clever. Even the best of us forget things; that’s what I tell myself at least.

Charla, from Healthy Home Blog
I had help choosing my name, “Healthy Home Blog,” but it really fits me. I’m trying more and more to make healthy choices in eating & lifestyle because I believe that so many health problems, from major issues all the way to PMS, are affected by the choices we make. And I love taking care of my family (it works both ways, we help each other), so the home part fits like a glove. I hope that things I’ve learned along the way can benefit some people, and I like learning things from other bloggers, too. -The name of your blog is very catchy and rolls off the tongue. Keep up the good work!

JMom from Found Not Lost
It’s a play on “lost & found”. Because the things that I “find” and blog about are not necessarily “lost”. Get it? See, I told you I’m the only one who gets it most of the time. -I didn’t understand the name of your blog at first, but now that I do it’s really cool. Sometimes I think names like this are neat because it’s like a treat when you discover the “hidden meaning” behind the title.

Thanks again for responding!
Anyways, I think this goes to show that names can work great, even if you don’t come up with it on your own. I think all of the participants have great names for their blogs, and in some cases it’s good to have a blog name that takes a bit of thought to understand. Of course, having an explanation somewhere on the site (perhaps on an about page) is always a good thing, too.

So, do you think that a blog’s name can effect it’s success, or is it totally uncorrelated? It’s your opinion, share it! :)

Thanks for your post and link love, it was a catchy idea. Also thanks for the suggestion to explaining the idea behind your title at least if it isn’t apparent to everyone.

Hey, thanks for including me. The funny thing is that “8isenough” obviously wasn’t available so my friend turned it around. I probably would have preferred the other…LOL! But it works for me…:)

Beth from greenstew.com left this comment on a post I wrote about your post here:

“I am in sales, and we always call money “green” I also am a make shift tree hugger.
So I named my blog greenstew because it’s about saving money in all sorts of ways, and a bit about being green.”
