Zero and Up

Why "Zero and Up"?
Zero and Up applies to many aspects of blogging: your visitors, subscribers, earnings, etc. No matter where you are with your blog, there's always room for improvement. Hopefully, Zero and Up will be a resource to help you take your websites upward, even if it's all the way from zero!

May Checklist

If your blog isn’t performing up to standards for you (in other words, you wish you had more traffic, subscribers, or ad sales) I want you to complete all of the following steps sometime during the month of May. Don’t put it all off for the end, either. Try and spread these steps evenly throughout the month.

1. Make 300 Comments On Various Blogs
Wow, 300 comments sounds like a lot! In fact, many months I don’t even make 300 comments. However, it only averages out to about 10 comments a day. If you do go for the big 300, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Comment on new blogs as well as old favorites - but no matter what make sure your comments don’t appear rushed. You won’t just get link power from leaving comments, you’ll get traffic as well.

2. Post At Least 25 Times
This means you can skip about one day of posting each week on your blog. Try and post every day if you can, but if you must skip a day, skip either Saturday or Sunday. For me, at least, Saturdays and Sundays are the days that I get the least amount of visits, whether or not I wrote a post over the weekend. By building consistent new content, people will get into the habit of checking back at your site on a near-daily basis.

3. Post On Blogging Forums Once A Week
Whether it’s the IZEA Boards, the Bloggeries forums, or the BlogEngage forums, you can reach a whole new audience at these type of discussion sites. There are tons of tech savvy bloggers who are willing to help you out, so if you ever need help with anything blogging related, those forums are the place to be. Also, if you are selling ad space on your website, forums are a powerful way to get your ads sold.

4. Write A Guest Post For Another Blog
Writing a guest post for a blog that has a bigger audience than your own can be very beneficial. Not only do you get traffic and links, you can read the comments to see what other people think about your writing style. Where can you go to write a guest post? The Net Fool and I’m Blogging That are both accepting guest posters at the moment. Also, I’m looking for a few guest posters as well, so be sure to read this post if you are interested in writing a guest post here.

5. Make One New Blogger Friend
Blogging friendships may not help your blog in itself, but they help make blogging a more enjoyable and tolerable experience. All bloggers go through the same hardships, so you might as well find a buddy. You and your newfound blogger friend can help each other out whenever you have questions or problems. In the long run, you can end up learning a lot about being a better blogger from your blogging friends.

I hope that many of you will consider trying these five steps during the month of May. If you do try them, be sure and tell me what you think!

Also, I’d still love some questions. No matter what you want to ask me, leave a comment on this post and I’ll do my best to answer it! I’d love to have at least a handful of questions before I write the feature post about it, so help me out. Thanks!

Hey! Wanted you to know I appreciated this post. I could honestly say that I’ve been doing everything on your checklist (well, I’ve guestposted once now about a month ago) except the comments. I’m seriously lax there. So…thanks to you, I’ve made it a goal to comment at least 10 times each day while I’m dropping ECs. Thanks Alan!

Hello from Australia! I am so glad I use stumbleupon to find good blogs, yours being one of them. Great tips. From http://www.freedom4life.com I have half a dozen blogs of my own which is way overload unless one is very very serious. I am almost that serious :) Happy days and many visitors.

    Cheers,

Kathy - Good luck, be sure and let me know how it works :)

Farmer Christian - Six blogs is a lot, right now I’m only running two and this one is the only one I’m actively marketing, so I could see how it would be really tough to do that for all six!

Desmond - Checklists were more helpful to me than I thought they would be at times. Just take a look at what you’d like to improve on and go from there :)
