Gas Prices Plan: Buy Average Or Less

Gas prices have been slowly falling recently, I’m very happy to hear about that. However, they could use to keep falling much much more, so here’s my plan - one that’s actually feasible and doesn’t inolve you boycotting a certain company or not buying gas on a certain day.

First of all, if you live in any town with over 20,000 people in it (and are in the USA or Canada) then head over to www.gasbuddy.com and look up your town. Always support the lower prices - but pay careful attention to the average price for your town. Only buy gas that is at or below the average price for your city! This will force the gas stations that are overcharging to lower their prices, and therefore lower the average. And, even if this doesn’t have a major effect on the pricing, you’ll be saving yourself money and getting the best deals, so no matter what it’s good for you. Tell your friends, and spread the word!

Also, vote to lower gas taxes. Did you know that they account for an average $0.40 per gallon?! Yes, there needs to be some taxes to take care of the road system - but some are pressing for an even higher gas tax nationwide, perhaps $0.50 to $0.60 more, which could push gas prices back above $4.00 nationwide.

Sorry for the rambling, but I’ve been looking at gas statistics recently, it is quite interesting. Whenever I get the chance, I’ll finally set up the sales page for my new eBook and start selling the $15 copies. Really, I think I may be undercharging a bit, just because you can make that much back in an hour easily.

If we really want to stop paying high gas prices and start saving money, shouldn’t we also be looking at alternative forms of transportation (including carpooling), taking public transit more, and getting those bikes out of the basement?

Vivian - I definitely agree. In some areas of the US though (such as Texas, where I live) things are so spread out that biking to many places would take hours (whereas it would only take 10-15 minutes to get there on the highway) and there are areas where public transport doesn’t run.

I also think that alternative fuels would be great, but many of them would take a couple years to become mainstream, so while we’re waiting, we might as well pay as little for gas as we can.
